Rapid Strept Test Q & A

What is strep throat?

Strep throat is a painful bacterial infection that causes inflammation in your throat and painful symptoms. It can affect people of all ages. However, it’s mostly common in children between ages 5-15.

Strep throat is highly contagious, spreading through coughing and sneezing. You can also catch it when touching an object that’s contaminated, and then touching your mouth, nose, or eyes.

If you feel like you might have strep throat, call your doctor at Healing Touch Medical right away for treatment.

What is a rapid strep test?

To find out if you have strep throat, your doctor performs a rapid strep test. It’s a simple test done right in the office at Healing Touch Medical.

Your doctor looks inside your mouth and checks your throat for swelling and redness, using a wooden tongue depressor to keep your tongue down during your examination. Then a cotton swab on a stick is inserted into your mouth and brushed along the back of your throat for a sample to test for group A Streptococcus bacterium.

After your test, the results come back in about 10 minutes. If you test positive, your doctor prescribes antibiotics to take for five to seven days.
